Vero Beach’s Environmental Leader
When cable television executive G. Jeffrey Reynolds and his late father George I. Reynolds set out to build a private golf course community in 1992, they wanted to marry their love for golf and nature. After visiting Indian River Club, their low-density, 300-acre development in
Vero Beach, Fla., it’s clear the Reynolds’ passion was taken to the highest order.

Sample home
Homes are a blend of Old Florida and Lowcountry style.

Throughout this environmentally conscious community, which has a Carolina Lowcountry feel to it, it appears that preservation and enhancement of the natural habitat has been secured for generations to come. In fact, when Indian River opened in 1995, it was the third golf course in the world to be designated as an Audubon Certified Signature Sanctuary.

Golf
Audubon International named the course a Certified Signature Sanctuary.

At the time, it was one of the highest honors bestowed by Audubon International Inc., whose goal is to incorporate environmental-friendly golf course construction and maintenance practices from a development’s inception.

Best yet, this gated sanctuary is located just minutes from shopping, major highways and all the special amenities that can be found in the low-profile seaside town of Vero Beach.

Golfing Amenities Define Indian River
The centerpiece of the Indian River Club community is a 6,885 yard golf course designed by acclaimed architect Ron Garl. Garl designed this par-72 layout in the classic style reminiscent of traditional courses built in the 1920s and ‘30s, Indian River executives are happy to point out, offering a relatively rare cross-section of four distinct and pristine natural environments.

Courseside dining
Overlooking the course from the clubhouse veranda dining.

For example, the western quarter of the course features large stands of longleaf pines typically found on courses in the Carolinas. Meanwhile, the mid-section, with its white sugar sand, large clear lakes and marshes, has an “Old Florida” feel and the eastern end of the course houses hammocks of old oaks and one of the largest stands of sand pine in the county.

Golf aerial shot

Two signature holes are Nos. 5 and 6, which play along an ancient coastal sand dune with elevations up to 50 feet. Before or after a round of golf, members have the use of a charming and intimate Carolina Lowcountry-style clubhouse designed by the famed architectural firm of Chapman, Coyle, Chapman. Haven’t heard of them? They’re the same group that designed the clubhouse at Augusta National.

Real Estate Opportunities
When Indian River is built out, this close-knit community will only have 240 homes on 300 acres, including the golf course. Placed in stands of ancient oaks and tall pines around the perimeter of the course, villas, carriage homes, courtyard and patio homes and single family estates all take in views of either the golf course, lakes or nature preserves.

Courtyard home

Current home prices range from $385,000 to $534,000 for Carriage Homes or Condominiums, from the high-$500,000s for zero-lot-line Courtyard Homes, or from $600,000 to more than $1 million for Estate Homes for 15,000-square foot lots (minimum 2,500-square-feet).

The architecture is a blend of Old Florida, local Riomar-style vernacular and the plantation and cottage homes found in the Carolina Lowcountry. Design elements include broad streetside verandas, light-filled indoor/outdoor living rooms, shuttered windows and French-doors opening to broad vistas of the golf course.
