Beauty Is in the Eye of the Beholder
Internationally renowned artist
Claude Howell was once asked, "Of all the places in the world where
you could have lived, why did you choose North Carolina?" When he
replied simply, "It is the light," he could have
easily been talking about the warm light that shines on Lockwood Folly
Country Club in Holden Beach, NC.

Sunset over the Intracoastal Waterway as seen from the clubhouse.
The sun, it seems, sun saves its
best light, in all seasons, for this little corner of the earth. The
sunrises, the sunsets, even the moonlight, illuminate a way of life that
its residents hold very dear.
Nestled near Holden Beach, midway
between bustling Myrtle Beach, SC, and historic Wilmington, NC, Lockwood
Folly encompasses 500 acres of massive live oaks, 200-year-old pines and
delicate dogwoods, and commands two miles of frontage along the protected
waters of the Lockwood Folly River and the Intracoastal Waterway.

The property fronts two miles along the Lockwood
Folly River and the Intracoastal Waterway.
Boaters enjoy access to the
Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean. For those who love golf,
water activities and boating, Lockwood Folly is a perfect blend of all
three.
The Course and the Club
The Lockwood Folly Country Club is a
semi-private, member-owned club with equity memberships available to both
residents and non-residents. The course is a par-72 with yardage from
5,029 to 6,836.
The greens are tifdwarf Bermuda and the slope
ratings range from 122 to 139. Golf Digest rates Lockwood
Folly a Four-Star "Place to Play." Golfers have breathtaking
vistas of tidal estuary, moss covered hardwoods and stately pines as well
as river and waterway views.

Water comes into play on 12 of 18 holes.
Revered golf course architect Willard Byrd
has carved this premier layout to co-exist with, and complement, the
community. His environmentally sensitive design provides the setting for a
nature tour within a round of golf.
Tree-lined and non-parallel fairways afford a
sense of seclusion and serenity. As members frequently say, "You just
never get bored playing this course." Indeed, it is always fun, but
not at all simple. It is challenging, yet certainly offers opportunities
for all skill levels.
Much More Than Golf
Lockwood Folly is also a garden spot. As you drive up to the gatehouse
and on to the Clubhouse Drive, you'll see colorful, overflowing planters
hanging from every light post. Carefully manicured lawns and lush
landscaping add to the natural beauty of the community and green-thumb
gardeners further enhance the lushness of Lockwood with their creative
designs of flowers and foliage.

Enjoy waterway views from the pool and clubhouse.
If golf isn't your passion, tennis and many
other activities may be more to your liking. Fishing fanatics will find
friends to share their interests, and can cast their lines from their own
dock, the fishing dock or from owners' boats in the waterway and
ocean, which is just minutes away.
A spacious boatyard for storage and a newly
renovated boat launch make the boating experience easy and convenient. The community
pool and hot tub overlook the waterway, offering a panoramic view of the
barrier islands and the ocean beyond.
For those who choose to rock
and read outside, residents have their choice of the Clubhouse porch,
pool deck or waterfront picnic areas.

Residents about to embark on a day's fishing.
Lockwood also provides exciting opportunities
for those who love to walk, bike or bird watch. You'll see graceful
dolphins in the waterway, eagles making fleeting appearances and herons,
ibis, red fox and the favorite, friendly fox squirrels, delighting
residents as they make their way through the community.
For the more adventuresome--canoeing,
kayaking, clam-digging and crabbing are popular activities. And for pure
relaxation, it's just five minutes to uncrowded, oceanfront beaches.
Distinctly Different
Lockwood is distinctly different from
the larger and more ambitious communities, which seem to thrive on a
bigger is better philosophy, say community executives.
"Lockwood
Folly's remote location and classic low-country setting form an oasis of
charm and tranquility," notes Larry Schreiber, marketing director.
"It's a community that has a cozy, comfortable and congenial
atmosphere, where you find new friends whom you feel you've known all your
life."

Shrimp boats at the ready at the Varnamtown docks.
The picturesque fishing village of Varnamtown
adds to the charm and uniqueness of the area. Visible from many of the
riverfront homesites and accessible by both land and water, the tiny town
attracts residents who can pick up fresh fish, shrimp and oysters
right at the dock.
Huge
yachts and cruising sailboats on the Waterway vie for your attention as
well, creating a waterfront stage that has been shaped by the Carolina
coastline and has endured for generations.
It's All about Feelings
Ask any Lockwood resident how the community is special and different
from the countless others on the market and you'll receive a remarkably
consistent response: it's all in how the place feels. When posed with this
question in a recent survey, many of the answers echoed the following
comments:
"....the feeling of tranquility when you
pass through the gate"
" ...the feeling of a cool ocean breeze as you line up the putt on
the picturesque 18th green"
"...the feeling of serenity when you hear the chimes of a nearby
church reminding you of how beautiful life is"
"...the feeling of being an integral part of a caring community"
"...the feeling of great satisfaction when family and friends visit
and share the Lockwood largesse"

A Temperate Climate
The climate at Lockwood Folly is
temperate--where palm trees grow naturally, but you can enjoy the change
of seasons, too. An occasional winter frost is possible, but most of the
year residents dress in short sleeves. Flowers bloom year round and
coastal breezes keep the summer temperatures comfortable.
